Peshawar, Pakistan (CNN) — A Taliban splinter group took responsibility Wednesday for a suicide bombing that killed eight people, including a high government official, in northwest Pakistan earlier in the day.
Israrullah Gandapur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province’s minister of law, and at least seven other people were killed in the attack, officials said.
Another 30 people — including Gandapur’s brother — were wounded, provincial Health Minister Shaukat Yousafzai told CNN.
Gandapur had been elected law minister three times as an independent.
The blast occurred along the border of South Waziristan Agency, police said.
The bombing took place as Gandapur was exchanging greetings with visitors on the second day of the four-day festival of Eid al-Adha, the Islamic feast of the sacrifice, said Muhammad Yousaf, station house officer of Kulachi Police Station.
Authorities recovered a pistol and a hand grenade from the location of the blast, which blew off the legs of the suspected bomber.
Abu Baseer, a spokesman for Ansarul Mujahideen, told CNN his group carried out the attack. The militant group has claimed responsibility for other recent bombings, including one on a church service two weeks ago.
